Kota Kinabalu a Seafood Paradise

Sabah, also known as The Land Below The Wind, is the northern most state of Malaysia. Situated at the northern part of the Borneo Island, two third of Sabah’s border is made up of coastal land. The west coast of Sabah is washed by the waters of South China Sea, and the north-Sulu Sea and while the east coast-the Celebes Sea. With its unique geographical location and the many islands surrounding Sabah, corals and a vast ecosystem of wetlands have enriched it surrounding with abundant of marine life. With all this natural element in place, fishermen in Sabah are constantly supplying the local markets with plenty of fresh seafood.

Kota Kinabalu is the capitol city of Sabah, and also the most well connected city in Borneo with its international airport and sea port. Live sea creatures from Kudat, Sandakan, and Tawau have to pass through Kota Kinabalu before they are exported to Hong Kong and Taipei, two major cities of this region. With the major seafood suppliers in Kota Kinabalu, restaurant owners have made use of this opportunity to set up many seafood restaurants in the past decades. Today it is not surprised that seafood is one of the most popular food in Kota Kinabalu.

City Mall

City Mall opened it’s door to the general public on late 2006, ever since then there are no looking back. Even though City Mall is quite a distance from Kota Kinabalu City, it is well received by KK Lites. Today City Mall is one of the most busy shopping Mall outside Kota Kinabalu.

Located on Jalan Lintas, and opposite to the Sabah Golf & Country Club, City Mall is well position as it is not far from many of KK surburbs. City Mall is spacious and well planned for the comfort of the shoppers. The mall can easily be divided in to 5 alley ways. The centre alley is always busy with promotion and interesting offers, and lead to the end where Giant is located. Then there are The North City Walk and South City Walk, which consist of many smaller shops. Lastly two more row of shops are line up at both outer side of the mall, many restaurants can be found here.

Kinabalu Park Headquarters

The Kinabalu Park Headquarters (HQ) is located at the southern boundary of The Kinabalu Park. A two hour drive from Kota Kinabalu passing scenic country side along the Tamparuli -Kundasang road, will lead one to the Kinabalu Park HQ. With an altitude of 1500 metres Kinabalu Park HQ has a cooling temperature average between 24°C to 18°C. Accommodations, restaurants, souvenir shops and exhibition centres are some of the facilities provided at the Kinabalu Park HQ. The Kinabalu Park HQ office is situated right at the entrance. Overnight visitors and climbers must register at the office, before moving on to their destinations.

Rafflesia Flower (Sighting is no Guarantee)

Rafflesia is claimed to be the largest flower on earth, and it can be found only in the rainforests of South East Asia. Rafflesia is rarely seen, because it needs the perfect condition of right humidity and warmth for it to blossom. As many as seven to nine months are needed for the Rafflesia to grow from bud to flower. After blossom the Rafflesia flower will last only 4 to 5 days, as the strong smell of the flower attracts small animals to feast on it.

Vegas Bar & Grill

A warm and relaxed atmosphere are what one feels the moment one steps into Vegas Bar & Grill. It has a simple but well planned interior, that used warm lights and rattans chair with red ribbon to brighten up the main section of the room. While the window tables and seats adopted a different setting from the main section, and two tables are located at the corner for those who need a bit of privacy.

Western cuisine is the main fare on the menu at Vegas Bar & Grill. Beef, chicken, fish and lamb are the few selection for one to choose from. Salads, soups, appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches, are served here. There are also some hawker style cooking like fried noodle and fried rice.

Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park covers about 280 acres of land, and at the moment 60 acres of the land have been utilized for the wildlife park and the botanical garden. The park has more than 100 species of mammals including birds, which are kept in captivity. Animals like the Bornean Pygmy Elephants, Orangutans, Proboscis Monkey, Borneo’s Rhino and Sun bear, which are native to Sabah, they are the main attraction here. The park is jointly developed and managed by the Sabah Wildlife and the Forestry Department. Located about 25km away from Kota Kinabalu City, the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park can be easily accessible by either the old Penampang-Papar road via Donggongon town or the Putatan-Papar road.

Elephants Dancing

Bornean Pygmy Elephant is the world’s smallest elephant. DNA anlaysis showed that Borneo’s elephants were isolated about 300,000 years ago from their cousins on mainland Asia. Since then, the elephants become smaller with relatively large ears, longer tails and straight tusks. Bornean Pygmy Elephants are also known to be rather tame and mild-tempered compared to others Asian elephants.
